  • 2025.5.20Research in collaboration with the University of Tokyo was reported on NHK

Research on novel coronaviruses and similar coronaviruses conducted by Professor Sato and his research team at the University of Tokyo has been attracting attention both in Japan and abroad. One of the important foundations supporting such front-line field research is the existence of the Nagasaki University Vietnam Research Station.
Nagasaki University has long collaborated with the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) of Vietnam and other local research institutions to continue research centered on the search for unknown viruses of bat origin. Strong relationships of trust and collaboration with local institutions have facilitated sample collection, testing systems, and information sharing, and these steady efforts have served as the foundation for the discovery of new viruses.
In this NHK interview, we see how researchers at Nagasaki University's Vietnam site collaborate with and support the research conducted locally by Professor Sato and his research team. The video also shows that the continuous network and local responsiveness that Nagasaki University has built over time serve as the background enabling research and analysis.
Through the cooperation of universities and research institutes in Japan and abroad, it is expected to contribute to the elucidation of the overall picture of unknown viruses and to future countermeasures against infectious diseases.

  • 2024.11.28Two-dose pneumococcal vaccination schedule for children demonstrates efficacy in inhibiting bacterial retention that is no less effective than the WHO-recommended three-dose vaccination schedule

Professor Lay Myint Yoshida (Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases), in an international collaborative study with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Vietnam, has found that a two-dose pneumococcal vaccination schedule for children is no less effective than the WHO recommended three doses in inhibiting the retention of bacteria.
The results indicate that a two-dose vaccination schedule (1p+1) may be an effective option for preventing pneumococcal carriage and infection in children in a VT pneumococcal controlled environment.
This study was conducted in Nha Trang City, where Nagasaki University has a research sub station.

The results of this study will be evaluated by the Vietnamese health authorities and the WHO Pneumococcal Working Group and submitted to the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE), which advises on PCV vaccination policy.
Reducing the number of PCV vaccinations is expected to reduce the cost burden and increase the sustainability of PCV vaccination programs.
This would reduce the Gavi Vaccine Alliance's PCV budget by one-third, which could be used to support other critical vaccine assistance in low- and middle-income countries, saving more lives and health.
