On the 17th and 18th February 2025 (3rd Visit). Mr. Hiroshi Ogawa, Mrs Masumi Ogawa, Mr. Kouhei Ogawa, and Mr. Koichiro Hirayama visited JICA -jiggers Grassroot project.
Ogawa has visited Kenya, Nagasaki Mbita station 3 times since the year 2023, with the main Objective of installing floors in the most cost-effective way using locally available materials.
During the 1st and 2nd visit, Ogawa Construction Company and JICA-NUITM were able to partner with Welcome Trust, who came up with the low-cost, effective floors for 2 households in Ndhiwa Sub-County.
The Main Objective.
- Test the most durable floor made using locally available raw materials that is cost-effective
- Train the masons in the installation process
- Interact with the affected family
The floor making process would be different from the previous cost-effective SABABU floor as follows.
- The procedure would be a bit different from the previous (SABABU floor) one, where removal of black cotton soil was dug out up to 45cm, and now we would dig out black cotton soil to 15cm.
- Filing and Compaction of Marram was done to replace the black cotton soil to fill the respective level that was dug out.
- DPM was then laid using Kamba lines to avoid moisture/dampness
- Cement and sand were mixed in a ratio of 1:1
- Nil was then used as the top finish
- Water would be poured for 7 days.
The activity was a success as there was media coverage in the local dialect to create awareness of the jigger’s infestation and the milestone achieved by both partners on the identification, treatment, and prevention measures of jiggers. JICA-NUITM, Ministry of Health, Homabay County, and Homabay County appreciates the efforts made by Ogawa Construction company through their generous donation of building materials, facilitation of the masons.
