The second training on the use of rabies rapid diagnostic kits (Lateral Flow Devices; LFDs) was conducted on 24 February 2026 at the Kabete National Veterinary Research Laboratory (NVRL), Kenya.

This training focused on the East Coast region of Kenya, with eight participants attending from NVL Mariakani, VIL Ukunda, VIL Witu, and KSPCA Mombasa.

The program included lectures and hands-on practical sessions covering biosafety procedures, brain sample collection for rabies diagnosis, and the application and interpretation of the rabies LFD. Participants practiced brain extraction, preparation of brain homogenates, and LFD testing under supervision.

As a next step, the trained participants will organize a follow-up training at NVL Mariakani, inviting surrounding laboratories and government veterinary officers. This approach aims to establish a sustainable regional training system and strengthen rabies surveillance capacity in Kenya.
