JICA-NUITM held Jiggers Campaign on 25th February 2025. This is campaign comes at a time when a 97% reduction of jiggers’ infestation has been realized.
Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, JICA-NUITM and other satkeholders organized this event at a central venue in Ndhiwa Sub-County with over 1455 participants.
This event brought 2 community Units, i.e., Kachuth and Kitiro and 3 Primary Schools;Mbani, Randhore, and Got Kowiti Primary Schools.
THEME: ACT towards healthy Livelihoods. UNITE with Purpose, ELIMINATE Jiggers
Main objective
- Creating awareness of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of jiggers.
- Provision of medical treatment of jigger patients
JICA-NUITM has since partnered with other Non-Governmental organizations that do similar activities to improve the livelihood of community members.
These partners include;
- Sawayume -WASH activities in Kasipul Kabondo (SMILE latrine)
- LifeStraw -WASH activities in Kenya (water purification and distribution of shoes in primary schools)
- The Ndhiwa MP representation
CHPs who had received training on jigger treatment by JICA-NUITM treated 17 patients. LifeStraw gave 11 pupils shoes, and JICA-NUITM gave 6 pair of shoes. (initial donation and SARAYA-Kenya).
This activity saw a lot of awareness creation on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention (Health talks) of jiggers as local media houses were present to cover the event.
The event was graced by educative poems, skits, and songs on jiggers by both the CHPs and the schools’ pupils.
The various partners were able to give speeches on jiggers’ sustainable control/eradication. Proper personal hygiene, sanitation, and environmental cleanliness.
The MOH speeches emphasized the good work done by partners to solve most of the community problems, and the community members should support the CHPs to make the community health strategies possible.
JICA-NUITM was appreciated for the good work on jiggers’ eradication/control and support of the MOH at different levels.
