The National Jiggers campaign is commemorated annually on 3rd March, this year was held at Kegogi Market Kitutu Chache North Sub-County, Kisii County.

This event was organized by the National Government, Kisii County Government, and other stakeholders.

The mobilization was well done, and people came to receive the treatment and information on jigger treatment and prevention methods.

This event was geared towards addressing both the immediate and long-term aspects of jigger’s infestation, this would contribute to a healthier future for those affected communities in Kisii and across Kenya.

Theme: Breaking the chains of jiggers’ infestation: Empowering Communities for a Healthier Community.

Main Aim

  • Raising Awareness about jigger infestation and its prevention.
  • Empowering Communities by providing knowledge and tools necessary for maintaining hygiene and preventing jigger infestation.
  • Providing treatment for those affected by jiggers, reducing the health burden on the local population.
  • Promoting the “EPUKA UCHAFU AFYA NYUMBANI” Campaign which focuses on encouraging cleanliness and proper sanitation at the household level.

The treatment was conducted using jigger lotion (SARAYA)and potassium permanganate solution.

The key message during the speeches was on public awareness creation of jiggers as a disease that is easily treated and can be prevented easily.

The Kisii County Health Promotion Officer conducted education on jiggers with questions and answers session.

JICA-NUITM managed to have an interactive session with Dr. Anthony Wainana, Dr. Sikali, and Ms. Agnes Githinji from the National Division of Environmental Health and Sanitation and the Division for Vector Borne and Neglected Tropical Diseases respectively.
