The National Jiggers campaign is commemorated annually on 3rd March, this year was held at Lakhome health facility, Kitale County.
This event was organized by the National Government, Kitale County Government, and other stakeholders.
The mobilization was well done and many people came to receive the treatment and the information on jigger treatment and prevention methods. we could see the need for treatment by the community members.
The main theme is Collective Action and shared Ownership for jigger eradication
The treatment was done using jigger lotion (SARAYA)and potassium permanganate solution.
Jiggers are an issue of concern in this area, most people present with severe conditions on both hands and feet, all age groups are affected and there’s a need to have sustainable measures to control/eradicate the diseases.
247 patients, both children and adults, and all were given shoes.
JICA-NUITM managed to support treating jigger cases.
The key message during the speeches was on public awareness creation of jiggers as a disease that is easily treated and can be prevented easily.
The key determinants to control/eradicate jiggers are environmental management, Sustainable personal hygiene, and seeking treatment whenever one is affected.
The Kitale County government was fully involved in this exercise as CEC Health, Director of Health, and other county and sub-county health staff.
JICA-NUITM managed to have an interactive session with the head of Environmental Health, Dr.Sikali about the reporting of jiggers to the electronic Community Health Information System(e-chis).
