This meeting was held from the 22nd to the 24th of May 2023 at Gelian Hotel, Machakos County. This meeting was on the integration of Neglected Tropical Diseases indicators into the Kenya Health Information System (KHIS.)

Most of the Neglected Tropical Diseases are not adequately reported in the KHIS making accessibility of this data to inform decisions difficult thus leaving the affected population vulnerable. This meeting was to see a change in this.

The meeting had the following objectives;

  • Finalize the roadmap of integration of NTD indicators into KHIS
  • Customize data elements and datasets
  • Review and feedback on the NTD database
  • Develop a standardized draft tool for data collection.

There are 47 Neglected Tropical Diseases but this meeting was seeking to address the following, Schistosomiasis (SCH), soil-transmitted Helminths (STH), Trachoma, and Leishmaniosis. Lymphatic Filariasis, STH, STH, snake bites, jiggers. The meeting was also about the WASH logistics and supplies.

JICA-NUITM presented the challenges they face with reporting tools like MOH 514,515,705 and 708.

A consensus was arrived at to come up with a standard tool to be able to tell the prevalence of jiggers in the targeted counties in Kenya up to the household levels.

This process was the same for all the NTDs and we were able to come up with SMART indicators with agreed data elements, frequency of data collection, who to do the collection, type, and mode on frequency.

This meeting will ensure coming up with standardized tools from the Households as reported by the CHVs, and CHAs and summarized in the KHIS.

Ms. Kana presented on sustainable tungiasis control in Homabay and cited the challenges faced during reporting.
