申請計画に関連する分野での研究実績

1985 年に長崎大学熱帯医学研究所に着任して以来、(1)マラリア感染における防御免疫の成立、(2)熱帯熱マラリアの再燃の原因、(3)マラリア伝播のキーとなる無症状生殖母体保有者の検出の３つのテーマを中心に、ヒト感染性マラリアおよびネズミマラリア原虫のモデルを用いて一貫してマラリアの研究を行ってきた。また、海外においては、タイのチェンマイ大学医学部寄生虫学教室と共同で熱帯熱マラリア患者から得られた新鮮株に関する感染赤血球の細胞接着能と患者症状との関連についての研究を行ったり、インドネシアのロンボク島におけるマラリア疫学調査に参画した。2000 年からはベトナムでのマラリア伝播の調査のため、住民からろ紙へ採集した血液から、従来は困難であると考えられていたRNA の抽出に成功し、RT-PCR 法によってマラリア原虫の生殖母体を検出する手法を開発した。さらに、この技術を蚊の唾液腺をサンプルに応用し、ベトナムにおいて、初めてサルマラリア原虫とヒトマラリア原虫の蚊での複合感染例を見出し、報告した（Nakazawa et al,2009）。さらに、昨年は多くのサルマラリアのヒト感染例を見出した（投稿準備中）。
