On the 4th Tuesday, October 2022, JICA –NUITM grassroots project received a journalist from Johannesburg chief, Mainichi newspaper, with the main objective to conduct prevention and enlightenment activities in the project area. JICA-NUITM, together with the Ministry of Health (MOH) Ndhiwa, the sub-county public health officer, and the focal person, respective CHAs and CHVs, selected three households with the adversely affected persons with tungiasis to visit. Client 1 (First visit) This is an elderly woman severely infested with jiggers, and she said she had jiggers for the last 30 years. She is heavily infested on the feet and hands. The team managed to conduct the health talk and treatment using silicone oil. The team shall do regular follow-ups. Client 2 (Forth visit) She is an elderly lady, severely infested with jiggers. Her living conditions are very poor, and she depends on well-wishers to feed her. The team conducted a health talk and treatment using silicone oil. She also says she could be exposed in her church because they go barefoot. The team would do follow-ups from time to time. Client 3 (Second visit) This is a young man who lives with his mother. On our first visit, he was heavily infested with jiggers, and he had hyperkeratosis. Since it is with consistent treatment and monitoring by the CHA and CHV, he is recovering well, and at that moment, we couldn’t find the new infestation. The relatives also participated by building a new house in another location for them. We are grateful for Mainichi newspaper for taking their time to visit our project site and inform their readers about the jiggers' project.
