研究テーマ

1. 分子疫学、地域公衆衛生

病原体の遺伝多型およびゲノム比較分析に基づいて、病原体の伝搬経路追跡に関する調査・疫学研究、地域特異性に関する遺伝学的解析を行う。分析対象を分離菌株のみならず、臨床検体、野生動物、古病理標本など幅広く設定し、現代社会における病原体の拡がりと定着に至る経緯を究明する。得られた情報を感染症対策と結びつけ、地域公衆衛生や獣医学領域への還元を模索する。

2. 野生動物、飼育動物における感染症と病原体の適応進化

宿主となる生物が様々な病原体に感染する理由は何か。逆に言うと、病原体はなぜ出現するのか。病原性を生命現象における普遍的なふるまいの一つとして捉え、宿主と病原体の共進化や、適応に伴う変遷(伝搬経路や免疫回避、宿主接着性など)に関する現象をターゲットとした研究を行う。具体的には、白血病ウイルスの宿主(ヒトとサル)の感染経路と感染個体数の変遷、抗酸菌(結核菌群など)の抗原性多様性の分子進化、腸管接着性大腸菌の接着因子の多様性などを対象とする。
