大会長の挨拶

長崎へようこそ!

The 66th Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine Congress will be held at Sakamoto campus, Nagasaki University, Nagasaki city. Nagasaki Medical University is a historical institution that was initiated by a Dutch naval surgeon Pompe van Meerdervoort in 1857, leading to the establishment of the Medical Training Institute (Igaku Denshūsho), which became Japan's first modern, western-style medical school and hospital in Japan. The campus also holds the BSL4 facility, the Center for Prevention and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the Institute of Tropical Medicine.

Recently, the world experienced a devasting COVID19 pandemic which affected our daily lives and has changed people’s perception of the threat of infectious diseases. Emerging and remerging infectious diseases, global warming and globalization can cause global health threats. Even though the highest burdens have been in the low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), mostly situated in the tropical regions, they are the ones with the limited access to the efficient drugs and vaccines due to the high cost leading to a limited essential health care. We all, as a global health community, need to work toward this problem. To high light this issue, the theme of this conference is designated as “Equity in Health Care”.

In this conference, we will be sharing exciting achievements and ongoing research related to the control and elimination of global emerging and re-emerging tropical infectious diseases. The conference will also include academic lectures and clinical case presentations related to tropical infectious diseases. In addition, we will share our efforts on how to reduce the health care gap between LMICs and high-income countries.

As the congress chair, I welcome you all to this in-person meeting to join this wonderful conference to learn, exchange new ideas, meet old friends, colleagues and join the networking activities to make new friends and collaborators from all over the world. During your stay in Nagasaki, I also hope you can also enjoy the delicious foods and the beautiful city of Nagasaki.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Nagasaki.
