Depertment of Paediatric Infections Diseases, Nagasaki University

The Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (PID) is a recently expanded department of the Institute of Tropical Medicine. We work on a wide range of diseases with special attention on pediatric infectious diseases including pneumonia, diarrhea, dengue and malaria. Our research interests include integration of clinical and environmental epidemiology at international, national and local levels.

A paper titled "Viral Acute Respiratory Illnesses in Young Infants Increase the Risk of Respiratory Readmission" led by Dr. Michiko Toizumi was accepted by The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal.

School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH) and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) will start new Joint PhD program in October 2018. The Joint PhD students will engage in collaborative research projects between TMGH and LSHTM and will be co-supervised by the faculty members of both schools. Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases is recruiting 2 researchers that will be stationed in Nha Trang, Vietnam to participate in an innovative global health project “Evaluation of PCV schedules in a naïve population in Vietnam” funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. [Link]
Dr. Michiko Toizumi gave a lecture on "Clinical Features of Congenital Rubella Syndrome in Vietnam" in an educational seminar for the 21st annual meeting of Japanese Society for Vaccinology held in Fukuoka.
Dr. Toizumi gave an oral presentaion titled "Characteristics Of Patent Ductus Arteriosus In Congenital Rubella Syndrome" for the 13th Congress of Asian Society for Pediatric Research.
Prof. Yoshida gave a lecture on "Pneumonia Etiological Agents in Vietnamese Children" in a simposium "Fight against Pneumonia in Asian Children" for the 13th Congress of Asian Society for Pediatric Research.
Dr. Toizumi has won Publons Peer Review Awards 2017 as one of the top 1 percent of peer reviewers in "General".

Dr. Lay-Myint Yoshida held a press conference with Prof. Kouichi Morita, the Dean of NEKKEN, and Prof. Shigeru Katamine, the President of Nagasaki University, on 19th November, 2015 and announced that they will start a research to evaluate PCV schedules in a naive population in Vietnam. It came out in NHK evening news (19 Nov 2015), Nihon Keizai Shimbun (19 Nov 2015, the evening edition), the Nagasaki Shimbun (20 Nov 2015), and Nishinippon Shimbun (20 Nov 2015).

Michiko Toizumi has been awarded a research grant from The Japan Foundation for Pediatirc Research for study of neurodevelopment in children with congenital rubella syndrome.

A Kick-Off Symposium for "Development of an Infectious Diseases Early Warning System for Southern Africa incorporating Climate Predictions (iDEWS)", a five-year project supported by the Japan's Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) Programe, was held on 5th August in Pretoria, South Africa. Prof. Hashizume attended the Regional Thematic Working Group on Climate Change and Health which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 9-12 December 2013 and had a presentation on "Flooding and diarrhoea: methodological challenges for scientific evidence".
