Application Guidelines for Joint Research at Overseas Research Stations Fiscal Year 2021

The Institute of Tropical Medicine Nagasaki University (hereinafter “NEKKEN”) is the only public research institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It is certified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as the Joint Usage / Research Center on Tropical Disease. In addition to applications for general joint research and research seminars, NEKKEN will be accepting applications for the following overseas joint research projects.

1. Applications (Joint Research at Overseas Research Stations)

We are accepting applications from among research facilities and networks throughout Japan formed to conduct research on infectious diseases who wish to collaborate and implement joint research at our overseas research stations in Kenya and Vietnam.
NEKKEN is accepting applications for the following fields:

  1. Collection of causative strains of mycoses and causative fungi and the establishment of a preservation and distribution system, epidemiological research, the training and so forth of young researchers, and the challenges of strengthening bioresources and revitalizing mycosis research in the region.
  2. Clinical epidemiology research and treatment / vaccine development research for AIDS.
  3. Other research issues related to infectious diseases.

Please note that the research period is one year; however, an application for continuation of research is possible.

2. Amount to be allocated

Expenses required for joint research will be determined in accordance with the contents of the application upon discussion by the Steering Committee for NEKKEN's Tropical Medicine Domestic and Overseas Research Stations.

The estimated number of applications to be accepted will be around two, and five million to ten million Japanese yen will be allotted respectively. This amount is only a guideline and may vary depending on the content of the assignment and the total budget allocated to the station.

3. Eligibility

A researcher who is a university faculty member or member of another research institution, or is the head of a joint usage / joint research station of a national university. Research organizations can include graduate students and researchers from overseas research institutions.

5. Results

Applicants will be notified of the results by the end of March 2021.

6. Notification of Joint Research

The applicant (representative) should submit a report in the prescribed format to the Tropical Medicine Research Support Division at soumu_nekken@ml.nagasaki-u.ac.jp as soon as the joint research is completed. In addition, the results of the joint research may be presented at the project report meeting held by the steering committee.

7. Handling of intellectual property rights

Nagasaki University Joint Research Regulations shall apply mutatis mutandis to the handling of intellectual property rights arising from the implementation of joint research.

8. Publication of results

When publishing research results in academic papers and so forth, be sure to add the results of the joint research and mention the use and so on of the facilities of NEKKEN in the Acknowledgments column.

In addition, please send us the details by e-mail or other means. If possible, submit one copy (PDF) and one poster to the Tropical Medicine Research Development Division at soumu_nekken@ml.nagasaki-u.ac.jp

We would also like to concentrate on the disclosure of information. Submitted reports and published papers will be posted in the Institute's activity reports, annual reports, on the NEKKEN website, and particularly outstanding results will be publicized in outlets such as the mass media.
