Characteristic of the Program

What makes this program outstanding is its curriculum which features the practical abilities professionals require.  The program aims to train such professionals as gHealthcare Policy Advisorh, gInternational Healthcare Consultanth, and gManagement of International Healthcare related-NGOs.h
The programfs primary purpose is to develop human resources with a good balance of fundamental academic knowledge and practical abilities useful in international health work.  In order to do so, the program has created a course development process as follows: gAdvanced Lectures of Basic subjects Ë Short-term Field Training Ë Advanced Lectures of Applicable Subjects Ë Long-term Internship Ë Drawing up an Assigned Research Report.h

In the first semester of the first year, the advanced basic subjects will be taught to learn fundamental knowledge necessary for a professional who runs international health projects in the so-called Third World nations.

A short-term field training program (one month) will be carried out during the summer break of the first year to acknowledge the importance of practicing fundamental knowledge.

(3)

In the second semester of the first year, students will take the advanced subjects applicable for learning the expertise essential for a professional in international health.

(4)

In the second year, students will be sent to sites according to their specialties on a long-term internship to develop their practical problem solving ability.

The gSeminar on International Health Developmenth will be offered throughout the entire program to support students in various aspects regarding the thesis.  Specifically, in the first year, it will help students select research themes, review relevant materials, and decide where to go and what to do on a long-term internship.  Meanwhile, in the second year, it will supervise students during the internship and help them write their research report.  Also, in the second year, it will give students an opportunity to present results of their studies which will be reviewed both by peers and by experts.  In addition, in order to improve communication skills which are indispensable in actual situations, communication workshops will be put into effect both in Japanese and in English together with the report presentation and review.

Short-term field training and long-term internship will be carried out in collaboration with Nagasaki Universityfs overseas education and research hubs in Kenya, Fiji, etc., JICA, various NGOs, the United Nations, and international cooperation-related consulting firms.

Specialists in international health are required to have a wide range of insights and abilities such as advanced analytical facility in international healthcare, planning, operation, and assessment capability of countermeasure projects for systematic problem solving, deep understanding and consideration for coexistence with different cultures, and coordinating and management capability as a member of an international project team.  The program hopes to educate professionals in such knowledge, ability, and social cooperativeness, and will confer, on those who have successfully completed the whole course, the Master of Public Health degree, a crucial factor for working in the area of international healthcare.
