The 20th Nagasaki International Course on Research Ethics that will be held by the cooperation between Nagasaki University, Forum for Ethical Review Committees in Asia and the Western Pacific Region (FERCAP), Strategic Initiative for Developing Capacity in Ethical Review (SIDCER), on 16-18 August 2021 at Institute of Tropical Medicine in Sakamoto Campus, Nagasaki University, Nagasaki, Japan.

Course format

The training will be conducted in a mutual education system centered on group discussions. Participants will listen to introductory lectures on each subject, discuss relevant cases in groups, and develop the ability to analyze ethical issues. The language used is basically English, but we will support you so that you can understand it in Japanese as much as possible.


Course participants

The target participants for this course are postgraduate students , researchers in biomedical sciences (including health social sciences) and members of research ethics committees.


Course objectives

Participants in the training can learn the basic idea of research ethics and at the same time grasp the recent discussions on research ethics at home and abroad. The main contents are basic principles of research ethics, informed consent, risk / benefit evaluation, use of existing materials, and ethics in international joint research. In addition, you will learn about the ethics of research for children, for communities, the ethics of placebo-controlled studies, the distinction between research and treatment, and the composition and function of the ethics review committee.
